In 2017, Amarillo Housing First collaborated with other local non-profits and agencies to have a low barrier Code Blue Warming Station (CBWS) to serve the homeless population who will not and/or can not use the existing shelters to stay warm during inclement cold weather. The CBWS is hosted in our office's building, the Guyon Saunders Resource Center and extends the building's normal business hours into the extremely cold nights and early mornings. By having few barriers or rules, more individuals can access services through this life saving outreach program. AHF volunteers staff the CBWS and we need volunteers and community donations to help make Code Blue a success. The CBWS does not take away from the important role our shelters such as the Salvation Army and Faith City Mission provide. The CBWS is a nonābed facility for those who will not seek assistance from traditional shelter providers. In addition, the CBWS permits individuals to bring their pets, which is one of many barriers for our homeless community seeking help during extreme cold weather.
Collaborating agencies include: Amarillo Housing First, Amarillo Police Department Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), City of Amarillo Department of Public Health, Family Support Services, Guyon Saunders Resource Center, Interfaith Campaign for the Homeless, Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, US National Weather Service, Panhandle Regional Planning Commission, Regence Health Network, Texas Panhandle Centers Behavioral and Developmental Health, and United Way of Amarillo & Canyon.
The creation of the CBWS allowed AHF to retire our Mobile Shelter Unit (MSU) which was a one of a kind homeless warming station on wheels for portable use during extreme winter weather and when existing shelters became overcrowded. The 20 foot box truck conversion provided emergency shelter for up to 8 overnight guests and 2 staff, and served as a warming station during the day for dozens of homeless who had nowhere else to escape the deadly Texas panhandle cold. The MSU was last deployed January 13-16, 2017 and the truck is now used for collection and delivery in our Furniture Closet and Household Goods Closet programs.
